The Web: Just As Addictive As Cigarettes And Booze

This story from the Huffington Post about the addictive nature of the internet has me torn. On one hand, the internet keeps me in a never ending hyper state of stimulus hunger that infringes on my every waking moment. On the other, it keeps me employed. The internet is a cruel, cruel mistress.

Apple’s OS X Lion

One thing you can always count on from Apple is a good show. Monday’s keynote was no exception. First of all, the fact that Steve Jobs was there presenting was a pleasant surprise. Second and as if on-queue, there were plenty of hoots, hollers and applause at just the right moments. And most well-deserved in Read More...

Meet Mary: Recent Graduate & Fellow Creative Technologist

Like myself, Mary Toves is a graduate of the VCU Brandcenter’s Creative Technology track. I learned during my final year at the Brandcenter, and as Mary’s 2nd year mentor, that she was perfect for the track. And a huge asset to our industry. Fresh out of the Brandcenter, (and I mean that quite literally – Read More...

A scam on Groupon? The beginning of the end?

What is it about companies that make them successful?  Is it always a great product? No. Is it a fancy logo? No.  Its usually customer service and the relationship formed with their customers.  Reputation is the main thing companies are judged on, and a bad rep can cause you to fail almost immediately. Tony Montana Read More...

The Power of Scream?

Heard an interesting point/counterpoint on this morning’s Marketplace Tech Report about the pros and cons of mobile phones that could be charged from sound.  It seems researchers in South Korea have figured out a way to convert sound waves into battery power. Is it the realization of Monsters, Inc – the power of scream?

Let’s make some awesome together.

I love this statement. It says to me teamwork, curiosity and drive for excellence. It was written by Josh Clark, author of Tapworthy, on the Globalmoxie blog in reference to the ongoing rivalry between Mobile Web and Native Apps. Actually Josh claims the rivalry is as much media hype as reality. Most people use both, so why Read More...

Real Tech Rockstars: Engineers or Designers?

The short answer, both. You can develop a great product, but without good design it will fail. Conversely, you can have a great design, but without a good back-end/front-end architecture, no one will be able to use the product. Good advice, and often thrown to the side by many, Putorti and Patzer suggest you have Read More...

Marketers are like 17yr old boys

Yes. That’s right. When it comes to using personalization and targeting, marketers have been likened to 17 year old virgins rushing to get into a girl’s pants. Often, brands get so excited about the technology that they don’t think through the proper way to use it or how it might impact the long term relationship. Read More...

Two lessons from SXSW Day#2: How To Listen. How To Speak.

I want you to read something my old friend, Jelly Helm, posted in his blog back in June of ‘09. He’d attended a conference and had this observation: “Also interesting to me about the conference is the role technology and Attention Deficit Disorder play. Everyone tweeting and multitasking and blogging. Does it add more value Read More...

Maybe #SXSW Interactive Should Become #SXSW Interpersonal

A theme I’m picking up across multiple speakers and panels goes something like this… Technology as the “Great Enabler” may be getting overthrown by technology as the “Great Generator of Stuff We Can’t Keep Up with Anymore and It May Actually Be Making Us Less Better People”. Yesterday’s “Why Everything is Amazing But Nobody is Read More...
